The Texas Legislative Session Began January 12th.

The Texas Legislature began its 140-day session at noon on Tuesday, January 12. Decisions that legislators will make in the coming months will have a direct impact on public education funding (including the funding for GT programs), property taxes, and other issues important to GCISD and SAGE.

GC-SAGE has set their legislative priorities for the 2020-2021 session.  These goals include: 

  • Ensure Texas Public Schools Are Fully Funded
  • Restore Dedicated State Funding (without caps) for G/T Services
  • Ensure Compliance With State Plan  
  • Maintain G/T Law in HB 3

GCISD does a wonderful job of not only meeting, but exceeding, compliance set forth in the State Plan and HB 3, therefore SAGE will be using our voice to advocate for GT students across our state who are not as fortunate.

The Texas Association of Gifted and Talented (TAGT) has developed their Advocacy Goals for ’20-21 and SAGE has chosen to support those goals and mirror many of their priorities. TAGT focuses it’s policy-related advocacy on goals that will strengthen programs, services and funding for gifted and talented education.

The GCISD Board of Trustees has adopted legislative priorities to highlight ways legislators can support public education in our community. Throughout the session, GCISD will provide updates on the status of these priorities and other issues that will shape public education in our community and across the state.
