WHAT IS GIFTEDNESS?

“Children are gifted when their ability is significantly above the norm for their age. … It is important to note that not all gifted children look or act alike.” — Read more from the National Association for Gifted Children

LABELS

“Everyone is labeled. The only choice is whether we want more formal labels as opposed to only the informal labels applied to us every single day. … … Some people argue against the term ‘gifted,’ believing it implies superiority or arrogance. I believe the opposite. To me, the word ‘gifted’ as it applies to cognition is a constant reminder that this was a gift, not earned.” — Read more from GiftedGuru

FAMILY DYNAMICS

“One or more gifted children … greatly impacts family dynamics. … Gifted children often react strongly to events in the family that upset the family equilibrium. … A gifted child’s intensity affects his relationship with siblings.” — Read more from Supporting the Emotional Needs of the Gifted

EXPLAINING GIFTEDNESS.

Here are three visuals from Byrdseed that show how gifted students will flourish in an educational environment that values abstract reasoning, independent thinking, a fast pace of learning, and intellectual peers.

ASYNCHRONY

Some (not all) gifted children could be described as having asynchronous development. “Parents often describe these children as being many ages at once. A five year old, for example, might read third-grade books, lack the small motor coordination necessary for kindergarten art projects, have lengthy conversations with adults, and struggle to communicate effectively with age peers—all at the same time. Asynchronous development becomes less of an issue as children grow up, but the challenges can last well into adolescence.” Read more from Psychology Today. … and Bonus: A more scholarly article about asynchronous development from Davidson Gifted.

ENRICHMENT

We like the tons of ideas on these three lists that focus on a wide range of subject areas:
– Free/low cost online resources in ten areas of common interest to gifted children.
– Texas Association for the Gifted & Talented’s compilation of summer camps, afterschool and year long programs, offered throughout the country:
– Also from TAGT: Academic Programs and Competitions:

ANXIETY

“It’s easy to assume that the intellectual advantages of gifted students give them an easier life, but it seems that each advantage also has an unexpected dark side. One of those side-effects is increased anxiety.” Read more from Byrdseed

CONFERENCE

The Texas Association for the Gifted & Talented giftED18 conference opens at the Fort Worth Convention Center on Nov. 28-30, 2018. A great in-town opportunity for educators and parents to sit in on keynotes and breakout sessions.

COLLEGES

Gifted students in high school may face hundreds of decisions when choose a college. The articles selected here include advice about college planning, the college admission process — and the unique needs of gifted students.

ACCELERATION

If you’re wondering if your child should skip a grade or move ahead in a particular subject area, the Acceleration Institute is a good place for information. “Acceleration is a matter of educational equity. All children deserve the opportunity to develop their talents. Lack of academic or intellectual challenge leads to disengagement.” More from Acceleration Institute.

PARENTING

“‘Parenting is a lonely job. It’s very important to know that you’re not alone.’ Parents of gifted experience emotions of relief when they finally meet other parents with whom they can share parenting experiences. Explore the options in your community for meeting with other parents.” — Read more (and maybe see yourself) in this reflective blog post provided by SENG

LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACY

SAGE closely follows legislation that affects funding for education in general, and gifted services specifically. Here are three things to be aware of:

– In Texas, the Texas Commission on Public School Finance allocates funds for gifted education. SAGE and other Texas parent groups associated with Texas Association for the Gifted & Talented have rallied parents for the past several years to call our legislators and share stories of why GT matters in Texas — and so far, together, we have had assurance that the G/T allotment is protected in our state.

– The National Association for Gifted Children released this position statement: “Policy Makers should be aware that … gifted persons … will comprise a large proportion of the leadership of the next generation in the arts, sciences, letters, politics, etc. If we provide this group with a mediocre education we doom ourselves to a mediocre society a generation forward. Educators know how to provide an excellent education for these students, but it will not happen by accident or benign neglect.”

– SAGE encourages our members to attend legislative and candidate forums, and to share personal stories about the needs of your gifted student with your elected officials. We encourage SAGE members to vote in all elections.

8 Reasons You Should Label Kids as Gifted

Family Dynamics

ETIQUETAS.

http://www.accelerationinstitute.org/parents.aspx

CRIANZA.

http://gc-sage.org/legislative-update-successful-may…/
